The Indian Health Service (IHS) is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. As the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for Indian people, IHS’s goal is to raise their health status to the highest possible level. The Alaska Area Native Health Service (AANHS) provides financial and personnel support to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and other tribal health providers in Alaska. AANHS also works with other federal agencies such as the Arctic Investigations Laboratory, and the National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health (both part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Environmental Protection Agency, and various State agencies to enhance the effectiveness of funding and other services provided to Native beneficiaries in Alaska.
